The crew under the canopy
Understorey is a small clearance crew for the garden suburbs of Ku-ring-gai. The name is the layer beneath the canopy, where everything accumulates, and, if we're honest, the under-storey of a long-held house too: the shed, the garage, the space beneath the floorboards. That layer is our whole trade.
What we believe about this work
A garden is a garden, not a tip face. Most rubbish crews learn their trade on demolition skips and back lanes. Ours was learned around beds that took decades to establish, under a canopy the council rightly protects, and it shows in the small things: boards under the barrow, limbs cut to carry-length, the rake that comes out before the truck door closes.
The price comes first, or it isn't fixed. You hear one all-in figure after we've walked the job, before anything is lifted. It covers lifting, loading, sweeping and tip fees. If the figure isn't right for you, we part as friends and your garden is exactly as we found it.
Some jobs are about pace, and some are about patience. A dead fridge should be gone today, and we run our everyday pickups that way, same-day where we can. A family home being cleared after a death should never be rushed by anyone, least of all the crew, and that work runs at the family's pace, always.
Where it goes matters. Green waste to mulch, e-waste and whitegoods to licensed facilities, good furniture to charity where it'll be accepted, and a straight answer to anyone who asks. We've written the whole thing down in where it all goes.
Why only these suburbs
Because the work is different here, and doing it well means knowing it. Knowing that hedge season fills July, that the liquidambars will bury Turramurra by the first of June, that a Gordon unit job starts with the building manager and a Wahroonga job starts with the driveway. We'd rather be the crew that knows one ridge street by street, Wahroonga down to Roseville, than a dot on a Sydney-wide franchise map.
